Skating Classes
We offer skating classes for ages and skill levels, including adults! We will do our best to group skaters together with others close in age and skill level, although this will not always be possible if we do not have enough participants for this, in which case we will group as closely as possible.
Each skating class will work on tiered skill development, each skater must pass off the skills in level 1 in order to move on to level 2, and so on. Skaters will be placed in the class appropriate for their skill level and development according to their instructor's observations of their needs.
Our program at KJ's Ice Barn starts with universal Beginning Skating Skills, levels 1-3 (foundational skills needed for hockey and figure skating). After passing off these skills, skaters may move to KJ's Learn to Play classes which will be divided into Hockey Skills levels 3-6, or Learn to Skate USA Figure Skating classes (which will teach Basic Skills 4-6 and Freestyle 1). We also offer Parent-and-Tot classes for skaters age 5 and under, which are taken with a parent, guardian, or responsible older sibling.
Summer Session
Our Summer Learn to Skate sessions will consist of 4 classes with 25 minutes of instruction and 25 minutes of practice time. We will also include 8 free passes for public skate so that skaters can practice; the more you practice the better you will get and the more quickly you will progress! Summer classes will be divided into beginning and intermediate sessions. Beginning skating skills levels 1-3 and Parent-and-Tot classes will be in the morning from 10-11am, and Learn to Skate USA skating levels 4-6 and Freestyle 1 will be taught in the evenings 5-6pm. Dividing these sessions will allow us to better serve the needs of our skaters and make sure we have enough instructors for these levels.

Learn to Skate USA®
The mission of Learn to Skate USA® is "to provide a fun and positive experience that will instill a lifelong love of skating." It is the only program endorsed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey, and US Speed skating because it provides a solid foundation for all three ice sports by teaching the fundamental skating skills they have in common. These skills include forward and backward skating, stopping, turns, etc.
We will use the Learn to Skate USA curriculum for Figure Skating Basic Skills levels 4-6 and Freestyle 1, which will require a Learn to Skate USA membership for each participant.
If you have previously taken Learn to Skate classes, you can find your advancements/levels passed by logging into your Learn to Skate USA portal with your member number and password, which you will have received from memberservices@learntoskateusa.com in an email, and you can contact them for assistance if needed.
A Learn to Skate membership is required for each skater participating in the program, and provides these benefits:
- Access to skating records/advancements
- Ability to participate in sanctioned ice shows that are licensed to use music (blanket PRO license with both BMI and ASCAP)
