Youth Programs
-
Learn to Skate (Snowplow Sam: ages 2-5, Basic 1-6: ages 6 to adult)
-
Youth Hockey (Ages 6-18) Learn to Skate skill levels 1-3 and/or skating proficiency prerequisite.
-
Figure Skating Lessons (All ages) Learn to Skate skill levels 1-6 recommended, though not required. All figure skating lessons are taught by private coaches. See our Figure Skating section for more details.

Registration for November Learn to Skate opens on October 15th and will end on October 28th. Registration is also open for our Youth Hockey League.

If your child has never taken skating classes before, please sign up for one of our weekly Learn to Skate classes in addition to signing up for our youth hockey league to ensure that your child learns the skating skills they will need for ice hockey. Other options to learn these skills include taking private or small group lessons from one of our figure skating coaches, and/or practicing during public skate or stick time sessions (though we strongly recommend guidance from an experienced skater). The more you practice, the better you will get and the faster you will be able to master the skills taught in levels 1-3.

You can Register for all programs here: https://suyeti.leagueapps.com/.
Skating is for everyone! We want to create an atmosphere here at KJ's Ice Barn where everyone feels welcome, respected, and a part of our community, regardless of sport, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, abilities, etc. YOU are welcome here!

Why you should consider ice sports:
Participation in ice sports is a great way to improve physical fitness, mental health, build self-confidence, learn valuable life lessons, develop character, and build friendships. It teaches youth to work hard to achieve their goals, and to get back up whenever they fall or face set-backs.
Financial Assistance
We understand that costs of participating can be overwhelming. Our goal is to ensure that every child who wants to participate in ice sports has the opportunity to. We have options available for payments. Please contact us at info@kjsicebarn.org for more information on payment options.

Each Learn to Skate Session will consist of 6 classes that include 30 minutes of instruction, and 15 minutes of practice time. Classes will be organized by age, skill level, and skating interests as much as possible.
Practicing outside of class time is highly encouraged. This will allow your skater to advance through the program more quickly (saving you money) and building the skater's confidence on and off the the ice. If a skater has mastered the skills taught in a level before the end of a session, their instructor may decide to move them on to the next level. But only if the skills are sufficient.
Classes: Snowplow Sam 1-3, Hockey/Basic Skills 1-6, and Adult 1-6
Our program will cover Learn to Skate USA’s Snowplow Sam levels 1-3 and Basic Skills/Hockey Skills and Adult 1-6. Snowplow Sam is for Skaters age 5 and under. Basic Skills 1-6 is for ages 6 and up (including adults), and younger skaters who have already passed off Snowplow Sam 1-3. Each skater must pass off the skills in level 1 to move on to level 2, and so on. We will do our best to group skaters together with others close in age.

Unless a skater has previously passed off Learn to Skate USA levels, they will begin in either Basic/Adult 1 or Snowplow Sam 1. Skills will be checked on the first day of classes to evaluate the needs of individual skaters, and if necessary, they may be moved to a different class/level that best suits their needs. This will be at the discretion of the instructors per their observations.
What to Wear:
Make sure you are dressed appropriately so that you have a fun and safe experience!
-
Long, thin socks that go past the ankles (soccer socks, tights, etc.)
-
Long comfortable pants that allow you to move freely
-
Jacket or coat (the ice rink is cold!)
-
Gloves
-
Helmet (required for children under age 6, and strongly recommended for beginning skaters.)
-
Snow pants (optional, but encouraged for younger children who get cold easily and will be spending a lot of time falling and getting up!)
-
Safety pads (optional but encouraged)
Preparation for Learn to Hockey
In order to participate in Learn to Hockey and other Hockey Programs, skaters must pass off the skills taught in Learn to Skate Basic Skills levels 1-3. Baseline skating skills are necessary in all our hockey programs, and skaters who do not have these skills will be inadequately prepared and fall behind. If, however, a skater is able to demonstrate proficiency in all of these skills early on in a Learn to Skate session, we can transfer them directly to Learn to Hockey. Please see our Learn to Hockey and our Youth Hockey below for more information on these programs.

Preparation for Figure Skating
Before taking private figure skating lessons, we strongly recommend your skater pass off levels 1-6. All skills taught in levels 1-6 are necessary for more advanced figure skating, and taking group classes in the Learn to Skate program is more cost-effective than private lessons. However, your are free to choose what works best for you.
After graduating from the Learn to Skate program, skaters need more individualized instruction to learn advanced Figure Skating skills such as spinning, jumping, edge skills, choreographic skating, etc. This is best done by taking private or semi-private lessons from a coach, who will help you to do so safely and also help you understand and navigate the requirements of the figure skating world. Please see our Figure Skating page for more information.
Learn to Hockey
Similar to Learn to Skate, Learn to Hockey will help prepare any participant to advance in the hockey program. Baseline skating skills (taught in the Learn to Skate Basic Skills 1-3) are prerequisites for Learn to Hockey.
This Program teaches stick and puck handling alongside other basic hockey skills. Additionally, it teaches kids to have fun, feel pride in their achievements, and work hard to reach their goals. Levels 1 - 4 are needed for certification.
While having certified coaches, the program will be accompanied by players from Iron County Yeti. These players have skills and knowledge that they are eager to teach to future hockey players.

The program dates and times are TBD, but will fall in line with Learn to Skate. Like Learn to Skate, the program consists of 6 sessions that include 30 minutes of instruction and 15 minutes of practice time. The registration fee for Learn to Hockey is $60, which includes rental skates, instruction, ice time, and one free public skate per week (rental not included). Gear will be available to rent during the program, with costs TBD. If you are wanting more than 6 sessions, it is $10 per session.
Learn to Hockey is a great way to see if your child has an interest in playing this wonderful sport. It also is a benefit to ensure your child is safe and avoids harm while playing. Learn to Hockey is a prerequisite for the Youth Hockey program.

Who can play hockey?

Hockey is a coed sport. Both boys and girls find rewards from playing ice hockey at an early age. We encourage girls to come out and learn the love of hockey. As hockey may seem intimidating, our coaching staff and volunteers do their best to ensure this is a fun and safe sport for all who participate. Please keep in mind that hockey is a collision sport, and take necessary precautions such as always wearing safety gear.
All ages are welcome to come join us on the ice. Each group is split up amongst accurate ages and teams just like any other recreational sport.
The new age classifications are as follows:

-
U8 Age Category: 6 to 8
-
U10 Age Category: 9 to10
-
U12 Age Category: 11 to 12
-
U14 Age Category: 13 to 14
-
High School Age Category: 15 to 18
Any high school-age child will be invited to participate on our high school hockey team, Southern Utah Independent. Separate information is available for the high school team.
Should your kid play hockey?

Here are five compelling reasons your child should play hockey:

-
Hockey Health Benefits – Thanks to cell phones, video games, and various forms of social media, modern kids are not as active as previous generations of kids, resulting in a rise in childhood obesity. Skating is a proven exercise for anyone at any age, helping to enhance an individual’s agility, balance, and leg strength. And skating speed—the fast pace of a hockey game—helps promote fitness by improving a player’s endurance.
-
Overcoming Adversity – There is a lot of life in hockey. Getting scored against. Getting knocked down. Being called for a penalty. It’s a sport of ups and downs, allowing second chances for players to make up for any previous mistakes on their next shift. Hockey also teaches players to work together and support their teammates.
-
Respecting Others – At the end of each youth match, no matter the score, players from both teams line up at center ice, shake hands, and congratulate each other for a good effort. That’s an important life skill for every child to learn.
-
Being Part of a Team – Communication, encouragement, and passing are big elements of being part of a hockey team. The sport has proven to be an effective way for youngsters to learn about bonding and working together for a common goal.
-
Developing a Solid Work Ethic – With limited ice time to practice—most practices are about an hour—youth hockey coaches teach their players to skate hard, whistle to whistle. With little time to waste, players finish one drill and quickly prepare for the next.

Life isn’t fair. But the ability to deal with sudden changes often helps individuals deal with life’s ups and downs. Hockey for kids gives youngsters a jumpstart to succeeding as adults.
What do you need to get started?

To ensure your child is safe, here is a list of required equipment.

Figure Skating
We hope to build a strong and competitive Figure Skating program at KJ’s Ice Barn! This will depend on YOU, our skaters, and the amount of dedication, effort, and joy you put into your skating. We also want to make sure that our skating program has an atmosphere in which everyone feels respected, welcome, and valued, and part of the community.
All skills taught in Learn to Skate levels 1 - 6 are necessary for advanced Figure Skating, and we strongly recommend your skater complete the Learn to Skate program before taking private lessons as this will be most cost-effective to you.

It is strongly recommended that a skater have their own personal, well-fitted skates in good repair when they begin taking private lessons. You may talk with your coach for recommendations on this.
Private Figure Skating coaches are available at their own set coaching fees, and lessons will be arranged with your coach and taught on Freestyle or Public Skate sessions. For private lessons, you will pay your ice time fee to the rink, and then pay your coach’s lesson fee separately.
Freestyle Skate morning sessions cost $6 for entry (rentals not included), or a 10-punch pass for $50 (rentals not included). You can also skate on Public Skate sessions, which are $6. Rental skates available for an additional $2.
Freestyle Times are available from:
-
6 am to 7:45 am Monday - Friday*
*Please be aware, times are subject to change. We hope to add more sessions as our program grows!

Selecting a Coach
When selecting a coach, there are several factors to consider, such as: the needs of a skater, your availability and the coach's availability for lesson times, budget, experience, and how well a skater’s personality meshes with a coach’s personality. It is important to find a good fit for you personally, and coaches understand this. We recommend taking 1-2 private lessons from different coaches before making a selection. Additionally, it’s always an option to take lessons from multiple coaches in order to benefit from their different strengths.

Financial Aid
Figure Skating is a wonderful sport that allows for creative expression, teaches valuable life lessons, builds confidence, and can benefit both physical and mental health. However, we understand that the costs of participating in Figure Skating can be overwhelming. Our goal is to provide every child who wants to participate in this sport with the opportunity to, regardless of financial situation. Talk with your coach to discuss possible options. Financial aid may even be available to you through US Figure Skating. See their financial aid page here: https://www.usfigureskating.org/scholarships-and-funding/scholarships-awards-and-grants
